Looking after your human hair wig and extensions

blog 1

Looking after your human hair wigs and extensions can be a daunting task as lace wigs and hairpieces are an expensive investment. To ensure that they last long, you must ensure that you give them the necessary care. Remy hair has undergone processing to achieve particular textures and colours, so it’s important to care correctly for your wig or hairpiece. As a human hair product both wigs and extensions still need to be treated as if they were your own hair with some extra care and attention.

Below are a few tips and tricks on how to properly care for your lace wigs and extensions, we’ve got you covered #bestie !

Cleaning care

Knowing how to correctly care for your hair in terms of washing  is essential for ensuring longevity of the hair. The right techniques can ensure that you are getting the absolute best out of your hair!

Step 1. DETANGLE – This is probably THE most important step to ensure minimal breakage and shedding due to tangling during the washing process. Remove all tangles from end to roots, this can be done with fingers for light tangles or with a soft brush or comb. Start at the bottom to ensure you are not putting too much stress on the hair. If this step is ignored it can prove impossible to brush the hair later and could cause serious pulling/snapping damage.

We recommend a tangle teaser for ensuring your hair is at its best before washing. These are also handy to keep with you on the go to tame any wild hair during the day! Get yours here

Step 2.  SHAMPOO– Fill your sink/basin or bowl with lukewarm water, never hot! The heat is extra stress on your hair and can cause hair textures and colours to loosen or fade. Add your chosen shampoo to the water and lather to a bubbly consistency. Immerse the hair or wig into the water and DO NOT rub , simply let the water and shampoo cover the hair as if you were soaking a delicate fabric.  Leave the hair or wig to soak in the shampoo for 5 minutes before rinsing. This will loosen any stubborn build up on the hair, repeat this step if when rinsed you feel their is still some debris build up remaining.

We recommend the amazing clarifying shampoo from Moroccan oil, Clarifying shampoo is highly recommended because it helps with frizz, shine and tangles:

Step 3. RINSE & CONDITION– This step requires a jug, simply rinse the hair using cold water from root to tip. It is VERY important that you always rinse the shampoo off with the flow of the water following that of the hair fibre- root to tip! Again, NEVER use hot water as this will loosen the texture of your hair and or fade the colour.  Apply your chosen conditioner in the direction of the hair fibre and let the hair sit for a further 5-10 minutes. Repeat the rinsing process until all product has left the hair.

Why not try the specialised Balmain conditioner especially for human hair wigs and extensions:

Step 4. ALWAYS AIR DRY– After rinsing the hair, or wig should be placed flat on a towel and the excess water should be dabbed away. Once dabbed dry, any conditioning/oil sprays can be applied with a light spray motion over the hair,  this will ensure any oils lost during washing are replenished. Never allow hair or fibre to become dry and brittle, as this will cause breakage but be careful not to overload the hair to prevent product build up.

We recommend any argan/ coconut or macadamia oil sprays, a particular favourite of ours is

Finally, leave the hair to completely air dry either lying flat on the towel or resting on a wig stand, never blow dry lace wigs after being washed and rather allow to dry naturally. This will cause drying of the wig, and that may lead to increased breakage.

Turn down the heat

Just like the hair attached to your head, the exposure of hair of wigs and extensions to direct heat should be minimalised.   The heat damages the hair ends and this may lead to the drying out of your cuticles. Remember this hair isn’t receiving any of the natural oils that yout natural hair would so it is much more susceptible to damage!

Due to this, it’s better to refrain or minimalise from using heat styling tools and if you can try not to use hair dryers at all! However if you feel that you simply couldn’t get by without the use of a few heated rollers, using the straighteners or curling wand then using a thermal protection spray or serum will help reduce any heat damage to the hair.

Gently does it

Wigs and hair extensions need some extra care when it comes to brushing and taming!

Kinky curl textures are the only texture we recommend you detangle with your fingers and with a light shake, as any brushing can damage and frizz the texture.

Most other textures in both wigs and hair extensions  need to be combed out generally just the way you do to your natural hair. When combing the hair  you should be extra cautious, although the hair is generally secured in the base of the wig or weft of the extension, you should be cautious because sudden force may dislocate or loosen it from the base.

To prevent this, ensure that you begin brushing the hair to the top from the ends, while ensuring that you don’t get too close to lace base.

As mentioned we can’t recommend the Tangle teezer enough! You can even grab a pocket travel size  for popping in your bag when you are on the go to tame those tresses during the day!  Keeping the hair cuticle in a sleek smooth condition will help reduce any tangles that can cause breakage and shedding later on!
